Why would I choose a B.I.G. puppy (Bernese-Irish-Golden Retriever hybrid)?  Our family has been raising hybrid puppies since 2001. Although Michael grew up on a family farm in Iowa, and was involved in Agriculture, his first experience with genetics was in his undergraduate research with Dr. Walt Fehr’s soybean breeding.  Genetics quickly became an interest to Michael in this work.  In 2000 he located on a rural acreage at our present location near Wolcott, Indiana.   Our dream of raising hybrid (or cross breed) puppies was then conceived and began to materialize.

At this time, there were very few hybrid breeds of dogs available, as the majority of breeders focused only on purebred breeds.  Michael’s interest in genetics led to him deciding to raise a family pet and therapy dog from lines that had been strictly selected for good health, outstanding temperament and trainability that was not a purebred, but a hybrid.

The genetic health of purebred dogs has suffered somewhat over the years, due to the limited gene pools found in purebred dogs.  All purebred dogs are by default inbred and have a higher risk of being susceptible to diseases due to this inbreeding.  There are two ways to alleviate this condition which is caused by the inbreeding of purebred dogs. First, testing for known genetic issues and using purebred parents that pass these tests to produce future generations of healthy purebreds.  Second is to outcross to similar breeds in an attempt to reduce the genetic mutations that cause genetic disease. We decided to focus on raising a mixed breed dog, since due to its genetic diversity, it has a much lower risk of the genetic defects that can be found in either of its purebred parent breeds.  Our puppies’ parents are from carefully researched lines that have been OFA hip, elbow and cardiac tested as well as having extensive genetic testing.

Our first hybrid combination was the Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, combination.  More recently, always looking for opportunities to improve genetic diversity, we added the Bernese Mountain Dog to our Irish Golden mix.  With gorgeous, silky black coats and tri color markings, this calm, confident, alert breed is an exceptional choice for families with children.  Adding the Berner’s always sweet, friendly nature and sturdy size to our Irish Golden hybrid mix has produced beautiful, sweet natured B.I.G. puppies, our name for the Bernese Mountain Dog, Irish Setter, Golden Retriever mix.  As mixed breed puppies, these happy, healthy puppies have improved hybrid vigor due to their genetic diversity and superior longevity while still retaining the friendly, happy characteristics of its parent breeds.

Our B.I.G puppies can be expected to be a family friendly puppy with a happy, social, and loving nature.  Since they are a hybrid mix, instead of a purebred, they can be expected to have a longer, healthier life than most purebred puppy of the same breeds.  Medium in activity level and larger in size, they can be expected to fall between 50 and 90 pounds as adults. They are best suited for a family who wants their dog to be involved in their everyday lives and wants a willing, happy, easily trained companion. Submit an application today, to reserve your sweet natured B.I.G. puppy!

We are excited to be able to offer a B.I.G. puppy who is a wonderful family dog with the best opportunity for a long healthy life! They are BIG on compassion, BIG on loving life, and BIG on their relationship with you.  Contact us today to learn more, or to schedule a Facetime or Zoom call to meet your favorite Irish Golden Mountain Dog puppy.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share a little update on our little bear, Bo. He's our big lap dog and is just the best- loves to play and snuggle. He's a big fan of riding in the car, hiding in the curtains and playing chase. He's in training to be a big brother in just a couple months! Curious if you know the sizes of his brothers and sisters? He had his neuter done yesterday and is doing great.

I hope you and your family are well. My wife and I are still in Chicago, and now have two daughters in addition to our puppy which we picked up at your farm in March 2011.  She has been a great dog, both for our immediate family and the extended family we have visited over the years. Since she will be ten on Christmas and the kids are now in school full days, we have been thinking about getting her a friend (that she can also help train).  We are looking for another female, probably in the medium size.  What is the current lead time for your puppies?

I hope you are well and that all the puppies are happy and healthy! I wanted to check in and let you know that our puppy is the best dog we could have asked for. He is so loving and so quick to learn! We are doing (belated) puppy classes with him, and he is great with all the basics and even beginning to learn some fun tricks. Just yesterday we taught him to "boop" with his nose and he has already mastered the trick! Thank you so much for bringing this sweet boy into our lives! He has been the best thing!

Each of the breeds in our B.I.G. brings its special characteristics to the mix.  The Golden Retriever is one of Americas most popular dog breeds and is outgoing and trustworthy. Athletic, intelligent, and easy to train, these characteristics have made this eager-to-please dog a great choice for a family. This mid-sized beautiful golden-haired retriever is social, happy and playful. They take work seriously whether hunting, as guides for the blind, in search-and-rescue, and overall enjoy obedience.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a beautiful and regal dog.  Originally breed to be a family farm dog, they enjoy being a loving companion to their family.  They are very easy to train and are quick to pick up voice and hand commands. With a calm and friendly demeanor, they are a pleasant household companion. This big teddy bear with a soft and thick, tri-color coat is a well-muscled dog with a sturdy frame size. They are eager to please, calm and confident.

The Irish Setter breed is a high-spirited dog know for its flashy red coat, swiftness and grace.  Famously good as a family dog, with a substantial yet elegant build, they are sweet-tempered companions who are always up for a frolic with their playmates or children. An outgoing dog who easily makes friends, they are eager to please and are big kids at heart. Each of the three breeds in the B.I.G. mix adds its special characteristics to our Bernese Irish Golden puppies (or Irish Golden Mountain Dogs, as they are sometimes called).
